9th Ottavio Ziino International Opera Competition

NOTICE OF COMPETITION AND RULES

“Il Villaggio della Musica” Cultural Association announces the 9th OTTAVIO ZIINO International Opera Competition. It will take place in Rome from 26th to 30th October 2010 in Rome.

The event’s patrons include the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, University and Research, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Lazio Regional Council, Rome Provincial Council, and Rome Councillorship of Political Cultural Office.

There will be two parts to the 9th OTTAVIO ZIINO International Opera Competition.

A : THE ORDINARY COMPETITION (see article 1);
B : THE SPECIAL COMPETITION (see article 1 b) .


ARTICLE 1

The competition is open to falsettos, sopranos, mezzo sopranos, contraltos, tenors, baritones, basses.
Singers can be of any nationality and must be over 18 and under 38 years old on 31st December 2010.
There will be three parts to the ORDINARY competition: THE QUALIFYING ROUNDS, THE SEMIFINAL and THE FINAL.

THE QUALIFYING ROUNDS

Competitors will have to present two peces of music one of which can be chosen by the singer and the other by the jury from the five remaining listed on the entry form. The music must be taken from opera from the singer’s repertoire.
The jury has the right at any time to interrupt the singer or decide to listen to just one piece from the ones presented.


THE SEMIFINAL

Competitors who have obtained a qualifying mark in the qualifying rounds will go through to the semi-final and will have to present two pieces chosen by the Jury from the four remaining ones and not performed in the qualifying round.
The jury has the right to ask singers to perform only one piece.
Qualifying marks in the qualifying rounds and semi-final will be decided by a majority by the jury.

THE FINAL

Competitors who have obtained a qualifying mark in the semi-final will go through to the final and will have to perform two pieces chosen by the jury from those listed in the entry form.

In the final the mark will be a average mark from 6 to 10, i.e. the sum of the scores of each examiner excluding the highest and lowest scores and fractions.
At the end the final results will be drawn up and the prizes will be awarded accordingly.

The prizes will be awarded to the winners only if they have a at least 45 for the 1st Prize, 40 for the 2nd Prize and 35 for the 3rd Prize.
If there are equal scores the prizes will be divided equally.
Winners of the first three prizes of the last competition cannot take part in the competition.
Winners of the first three prizes of International Opera Competitions in 2009 and 2010 will be able to go straight through to the semi-final if they can supply the necessary written DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE.
Competitors (including singers who have the right to go through to the semi-final) must put six pieces of music on the entry form.
The pieces of music must be in their original tonality and language.

ARTICLE 1 b

THE SPECIAL COMPETITION is open to falsettos, sopranos, mezzo sopranos, contraltos, tenors, baritones, basses.
Singers must be over 38 and under 48 years old on 31st December 2010.

THE SPECIAL COMPETITION will be divided into two parts: THE QUALIFYING ROUNDS and the FINAL.
For the qualifying rounds competitors in this competition, will have to present two pieces of music chosen by themselves out of four on the entry form, taken from opera from their repertoire.
At the end of the qualifying rounds, competitors who go through to the FINAL of the special competition, will have to present a piece of music from those on the entry form, chosen by the jury.
The Jury has the right at any time to interrupt the singer or decide to listen to just one piece from the ones presented.

At the end of the final the winner of the special competition will be announced. He or she will perform in the gala evening of the final of the ordinary competition on 30th October 2010 at the Sala Baldini P.zza Campitelli, 9 Rome and will receive a prize of € 500,00.
The jury for the special competition will be the same as the one for the ordinary competition.

ARTICLE 2

Application forms for both competitions can be downloaded from the website: www.ilvillaggiodellamusica.it or written on unstamped paper. They must be filled in and sent by the 15th OCTOBER 2010

by post (and the post mark will be the proof) to the following address: Associazione Culturale “Il Villaggio della Musica” Via Diego Fabbri, 42 – 00137 ROMA (Italia), within the above-mentioned date, or
by fax to +39/06/87183904, within the above-mentioned date.

In the application form competitors must include their first name and surname, place and date of birth, address, telephone numbers and email address, type of voice, author and title of the chosen pieces of music.

The organisers stress that applications will only be considered if the forms have arrived by fax or e-mail with the declaration of subscription fee payment by the deadline unless they have been posted.
As mentioned before competitors who turn up at the qualifying rounds without filling in the application form will not be admitted.
If competitors fail to attend to the competition, the secretariat is not bound to reimburse the subscription fee.

ARTICLE 3

Competitors of both competitions must enclose the following documents with the application form:

Photocopy of a Identity Card that certifies date of birth and residence;
CV;
1 photo, preferably artistic;
Subscription fee of € 100 ( One hundred euros) made out to Associazione Culturale “Il Villaggio della Musica”, Via Diego Fabbri, 42 – 00137 Roma by:

ARTICLE 4

The qualifying rounds and the semi-final of the ordinary competition and the qualifying rounds and the final of the special competition will be held in via U. Aldrovandi, n. 16 Sala Italia of UNAR in Rome, whereas the final of the ordinary competition will take place on 30th October 2010 at the Gala Evening in the Sala Baldini P.zza Campitelli in Roma.

The order in which singers will be called will be according to type of voice, in aphabetical order and will be published on the www.ilvillaggiodellamusica.it website
Competitors will have to refer to the website for information regarding competition dates and times or get in touch by phone.

Competitors who are absent will be excluded from the competition, unless they have a valid reason and in any case they must arrive by the end of the qualifying rounds.
Neither travelling expenses nor board and lodging will be paid.

ARTICLE 5

The jury will be made up of art directors, opera singers and musical experts of international repute.
When the jury takes office each member will issue a declaration regarding any relationship with the competitors.

ARTICLE 6

Competitors must bring some ID and a copy of the music to be performed (for the association’s pianist) to the qualifying rounds.

ARTICLE 7

Competitors may be accompanied by the pianists put at their disposal by the competition organizers.
Competitors may bring their own pianists as long as they pay their fees and expenses

ARTICLE 8

In the final competitors of the ORDINARY competition will perform in front of the jury, the critics’ jury and the people’s jury, the authorities, people in the music business and the public.
At the end of the final of the ORDINARY competition the jury will announce the winners of the 9th OTTAVIO ZIINO International Opera Competition
The final evaluation is final.

ARTICLE 9

“Il Villaggio della Musica” Association reserves the right to record on video, audio tape, CD, DVD and film and broadcast on the radio, TV and the Internet all three parts of the competition (qualifying tests, semi-final test and final test) without paying the competitors involved.
By participating in this competition singers give up all rights for radio, TV and Internet broadcasting of the performances carried out during all the events and of contracts and of the prize concerts. Participation does not lead to payment of rights or fees of any kind for any reason.

ARTICLE 10

No responsibility is assumed for risks or damage of any kind to competitors throughout the competition..

ARTICLE 11

The artistic committee and the competition organizers reserve the right to make changes to the present rules if necessary..

ARTICLE 12

In case of objection to the competition rules the Italian version will be valid and Rome law court has jurisdiction.

ARTICLE 13

Submission of the application form means the total and unconditional acceptance of all rules in this notice and any changes foreseen by article 12.

ARTICLE 14

All finalists will receive a diploma of merit. All competitors will receive a participation certificate if they apply for one.

ARTICLE 15

According to law decree n° 196 of 30th June 2003 about the protection of personal details, “Il Villaggio della Musica” Association confirms that competitors’ details in the application form will be kept and used by them only to send information relating to the Association. According decree n° 196 of 30th June 2003 the competitors have the right to know, update, delete and rectify their data or object to their use.
