As part of its promotional activity for young opera singers Il Villaggio della Musica Cultural Association

announces

the 4TH OTTAVIO ZIINO International Opera Competition.
It will take place in Rome from 19th September to 24th September 2005 in the Accademia AIDM in Via Cimone, 150 and at the PARCO DELLA MUSICA Auditorium, Viale Pietro de Coubertin. The events patrons include the Italian Office of the European Parliament, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Education, University and Research, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Lazio Regional Council, Rome Provincial Council and Rome City Council.

ARTICLE 1

The competition is open to sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, contraltos, tenors, baritones and basses. Singers can be of any nazionality and must be between 18 and 37 on 31st December 2005.

ARTICLE 1bis

Hors de concours there will be a special section of AUDITIONS for sopranos, mezzosopranos, contraltos, tenors, baritones and basses who are between 38 and 49 years of age on 31st December 2005. The qualifying rounds and the final will take place at the Accademia AIDM in Via Cimone, 150. For the qualifying rounds competitors in this section will have to present two pieces taken from opera of their choice from their repertoire. At the end of the qualifying rounds competitors who go through to the final of the special section will have to present two pieces chosen from those from the regular competition compulsory list. The jury for this section will be the same as for the regular competition. The jury reserves the right to interupt competitors at any moment or decide to listen to only one piece out of those presented. At the end of the final the winner of the special section will be announced. He/she will perform with the orchestra in the gala evening of the final of the regular competition on 24th September 2005 at the Sala Petrassi of the Auditorium Parco della Musica and will receive a prize of € 500.

ARTICLE 2

Applications per both sections must be sent (the post mark will be proof) by 10 September 2005 to the following address: “Associazione Culturale Il Villaggio della Musica” Via Diego Fabbri, 42 – 00137 ROMA (Italy). Applications can also be faxed to +39/06/87183904 or e-mailed to: info@ilvillaggiodellamusica.it by the same date. The organisers wish to stress that applications will only be considered if, by the deadline, application forms have arrived by fax or e-mail with the declaration of subscription fee payment, unless they have been posted . Competitors who turn up to the qualifying rounds without having completed the application, as mentioned before will not be admitted to the competition nor to the audition of the special section hors de concours. If competitors fail to attend the secretariat is not bound to reimburse the subscription fee.

ARTICLE 3

Competitors must enclose the following documents with the application form:

  • Photocopy of a document that certifies date of birth and residence;
  • CV;
  • 1 photo, preferably artistic;
  • A non-negotiable banker’s draft or a non-negotiable personal bank cheque or a copy of the deposit into postal current account n. 60117850 - details as follows - ABI 7601 CAB 03200 CIN “L” made out to “Associazione Culturale Il Villaggio della Musica” Via Diego Fabbri, 42 – 00137 Rome, or a copy of the money transfer into current account n. 074001980486 of the Istituto San Paolo Imi spa branch 112 Talenti. Bank details are as follows - CIN “J” ABI 01025 CAB 03317 IBAN “ IT40 J010 2503 3170 7400 1980 486 B/C IBSPITTM made out to “Associazione Culturale Il Villaggio della Musica”. This is to confirm payment of the subscription fee of € 75 (seventy five Euros).

ARTICLE 4

The qualifying rounds and the semi-final of the regular competition will take place in the Accademia AIDM in Via Cimone, 150. The final will take place at the gala performance at the Auditorium - Parco della Musica Sala Petrassi V.le Pietro de Coubertin on 24th September 2005 from 8.30 pm. The order in which the singers perform in the qualifying rounds and the semi-final, but not the final, will be decided according to the type of voice and in alphabetical order. It will be published on the website www.ilvillaggiodellamusica.it. Competitors of both the regular and the special competition will have to refer to the site or get in touch by telephone for dates and times. Competitors who are absent will be excluded from the competition, unless they can give good grounds for their lateness and then only if they arrive by the end of the qualifying round. Neither travelling expenses nor board and lodging will be paid.

ARTICLE 5

The jury will be made up of art directors, opera singers and people in the music business of international repute. When the jury is sworn in each member will issue a declaration regarding any relationship with the competitors in compliance with ministerial regulations.

ARTICLE 6

Competitors must bring some identification and a copy of the music to be performed with them to the qualifying rounds.

ARTICLE 7

The regular competition will be divided into three rounds:
QUALIFYING ROUNDS
Competitors who have subscribed must present two pieces taken from opera of their choice from their repertoire (excluding the compulsory pieces of the final). The jury may interrupt the competitors at any moment or decide to listen to only one piece of music out of those presented.

SEMI-FINAL
Competitors, who pass the qualifying rounds will go through to the semi-final. They will have to sing a piece of music from the compulsory list plus another piece chosen but different from those sung in the qualifying rounds. The jury may ask the competitors to sing only one of the pieces of music. Marks in the qualifying rounds and the semi-final will be decided by majority by the jury.

Final
Competitors who pass the semi-final will go through to the final. They will have to sing two pieces from the compulsory list, including one already performed in the semi-final. The jury may tell the competitors which pieces to perform but the competitors are not bound by this. The compulsory pieces are as follows and must be performed with the recitatives and cabaletta, where envisaged:

In the final the marks will be from 1 to 10 i.e. the outcome of the sum of the marks of each jury member, excluding the highest and lowest marks. At the end the final results will be drawn up and the prizes will be awarded accordingly. The prizes will be awarded to the winners only if they have got 63 or more for the first prize, 56 or more for the second prize and 49 or more for the third prize. If there are equal marks the prizes will be divided equally. If no-one gets the above-mentioned marks prizes will not be awarded. The jury's decision is final.

ARTICLE 8

Competitors may be accompanied by the pianists put at their disposal by the competition organisers. Competitors may bring their own accompanists as long as they pay their fees and expenses. Music scores must not be changed in any way from the original regarding transposition and language.

ARTICLE 9

In the final competitors will perform with the orchestra in front of the jury, the authorities, the public and show business people. At the end of the final the jury will announce the winners of the 4TH OTTAVIO ZIINO International Opera Competition. The jury’s decision is final.

ARTICLE 10

Il Villaggio della Musica Association reserves the right to record on video, audio tape, CD, DVD and film and broadcast on the on the radio and TV all three parts of the competition (qualifying rounds, semi-final and final) without paying the competitors involved. By participating in this competition singers give up all rights for radio and TV broadcasting of the performances carried out during all the events and of contracts and of the prize concerts. Participation does not lead to payment of rights or fees of any kind for any reason.

ARTICLE 11

This year’s prizes are as follows:

1st Prize
€ 3,000 and piano concerts 2005/2006, the Ottavio Ziino Cup and a certificate of merit

2nd Prize
€ 1,500 and piano concerts 2005/2006, OTTAVIO ZIINO plaque and a certificate of merit

3rd Prize
€ 800 and piano concerts 2005/2006, OTTAVIO ZIINO plaque and a certificate of merit

SPECIAL PRIZES

  • Critics' Prize
    A plaque for the best artistic performance of a piece of music given by the Italian Office of the European Parliament. The jury for this prize will be made up of music critics and professionals in the field of culture and show business.
  • The Public's Prize
    A plaque given by Il Villaggio della Musica Cultural Association. In the gala evening of 24th September 2005 the public will receive a form with the finalists' names and will be able to vote for their favourite singer.

The prize concerts will be given by:

  • A.Gi.Mus. in the 2005/2006 concert season;
  • Dioniso Musical Association Savona, Spring 2006 Concerts;
  • Il Villaggio della Musica Cultural Association in their 2006 concert season (Barberini
    Palace, Rome).

For the prize concerts only travel expenses and board and lodgings are provided (other concerts may be given at the unappealable discretion of the commission of Il Villaggio della Musica Cultural Association). The most deserving participants will be brought to the attention of opera agents, art directors and others in the music business.
The winners of the first three prizes of International Opera Competitions in 2004 and 2005 can go straight through to the semi-final as long as they apply in writing and produce the NECESSARY DOCUMENTS.

ARTICLE 12

No responsibility is assumed for risks or damage of any kind to competitors throughout the competition.

ARTICLE 13

The committee and the competition organisers reserve the right to make changes to the present rules if necessary.

ARTICLE 14

In case of dispute of the rules the Italian version will be valid and the Rome law court has jurisdiction.

ARTICLE 15

Submission of the application form means the total and unconditional acceptance of all rules in this notice and any changes foreseen by article 13.

ARTICLE 16

All finalists will receive a certificate of merit. All competitors will receive a participation certificate if they apply for one.

ARTICLE 17

According to law decree n° 196 of 30th June 2003 about the protection of personal details Il Villaggio della Musica Cultural Association wishes to make it known that competitors’ details in the application form will be kept and used by them only to send information relating to the Association. According decree n° 196 of 30th June 2003 competitors have the right to know, update, delete and amend their details or object to their use.
